According to Pukui & Elbert, the literal translation of laulima is many hands, and also means cooperation, joint action; group of people working together; community food patch; to work together, cooperate (Pukui & Elbert, 1986)
I was born and raised on Oʻahu and while I am far from a Native speaker or Native Hawaiian, as I’ve begun to learn my kuleana (responsibility), laulima has become a critical value underlying all that I do.
I have the privilege of working with amazing people and community organizations and it is through our shared work that we grow, both literally and figuratively.
I also chose laulima as the māla kalo (cultivated field for taro) has brought so much opportunity and kuleana to my work. At the māla kalo I’ve developed friendships, learned more about the culture I grew up in, shared memories, and of course, talked about food.
Laulima Grant Writing & Evaluation aims to continue to uplift the Hawaiian community by 1) finding and obtaining funding and 2) working with community organizations to build and evaluate programs. I’m proud to work with so many inspiring people and look forward to new challenges as we work together to grow.
My work is largely influenced by growing up in Hawai‘i and my clinical experience as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, where I worked in outpatient, research, and management settings. Both experiences were foundational to my focus on promoting positive health behaviors throughout the lifespan through ongoing collaborative, equitable partnerships using community-based participatory approaches.
